Granting Permissions on macOS

ParrotKey needs Accessibility and Microphone permissions on macOS to detect your hotkey and record your voice. Follow these steps to grant them.

Why ParrotKey needs permissions

ParrotKey needs two permissions on macOS to work properly:

  1. Accessibility permission β€” allows ParrotKey to detect your hotkey globally (in any app) and insert transcribed text at your cursor position. Without this permission, ParrotKey cannot respond to your hotkey or paste text into other applications.
  2. Microphone permission β€” allows ParrotKey to record your voice for transcription. Without this permission, ParrotKey cannot capture audio from your microphone.

How to grant Accessibility permission

  1. Open System Settings from the Apple menu (Apple menu > System Settings).
  2. Navigate to Privacy & Security, then select Accessibility.
  3. Find ParrotKey in the list and toggle it ON.
  4. If ParrotKey is not in the list, click the + button and add it from your Applications folder.
  5. You may need to enter your Mac password or use Touch ID to confirm the change.

How to grant Microphone permission

  1. Open System Settings, then go to Privacy & Security > Microphone.
  2. Find ParrotKey in the list and toggle it ON.
  3. If you are prompted during first use, click Allow in the system dialog that appears.

Permission status during onboarding

ParrotKey shows permission status cards during the onboarding process. When a permission has been granted, a green checkmark appears on the corresponding card. If a permission is still missing, the card will indicate that action is required.

After granting permissions

After granting permissions, you may need to restart ParrotKey for the changes to take effect. If ParrotKey was running while you toggled the permissions in System Settings, close the app completely and reopen it to ensure the new permissions are recognized.

Platform Notes

Windows

Windows does not require explicit accessibility permissions. Microphone access is typically granted automatically or via a simple system prompt when ParrotKey first tries to use the microphone. No manual configuration is needed.
